Director of Technical Architecture & ConstructabilityAbout formX

At formX, we’re redefining residential construction through AI-driven design, planning, and execution - delivering premium, fully customizable single-family homes and ADUs through a faster, smarter, and more scalable process.

By combining advanced technology with deep construction expertise, we are building a new operating system for residential construction: one that integrates design, engineering, productization, and field execution into a seamless workflow.

We believe great homes are not just beautifully designed - they are technically rigorous, highly coordinated, efficient to build, and grounded in real-world constructability.

We’re looking for people who want to help shape the future of housing.

About the Role

We are seeking a technical architect/ designer who deeply understands how residential buildings actually come together in the field - including architectural systems, MEP coordination, detailing, sequencing, and constructability.

This is not a purely aesthetic design role.

You will serve as a technical leader across architecture, MEP coordination, detailing, and constructability while helping guide the design team toward scalable, buildable, and technically sound solutions.

This role is critical in helping prevent non-constructable designs from reaching production while improving consistency, coordination, speed, and quality across all projects.

You will work closely with design, engineering, product, and construction teams to help define how homes should be designed and built at scale.

What You’ll DoTechnical Leadership & Constructability
  • Review and validate designs for constructability, coordination, and field execution
  • Identify technical risks early and help resolve them before construction
  • Push back on non-buildable or poorly coordinated solutions when necessary
  • Mentor and support the internal design team on technical rigor and construction logic
  • Partner closely with field and construction teams to improve execution standards
Building Systems & MEP Integration
  • Develop scalable standards for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and low-voltage coordination
  • Improve integration between architectural, structural, and MEP systems
  • Reduce field conflicts through stronger internal coordination and technical planning
Detailing & Standardization
  • Develop field-ready architectural details and assemblies
  • Standardize wall, floor, roof, waterproofing, and interface conditions
  • Build repeatable systems and detail libraries that support speed, quality, and scalability
  • Help convert one-off solutions into scalable building standards
What We’re Looking For
  • 8+ years of residential architecture experience with strong technical focus
  • Deep understanding of residential construction methods and sequencing
  • Strong MEP coordination experience
  • Strong technical detailing and constructability background
  • Experience resolving real-world construction issues with field teams
  • Ability to simplify and standardize complex systems
  • Comfortable operating in fast-moving environments with high ownership
  • Revit proficiency required
Preferred
  • Licensed Architect in California strongly preferred
  • Rhino / Grasshopper or parametric modeling experience preferred
  • Experience with prefab, modular, or systemized residential construction is a plus
Why Join formX
